Dolby Digital®, DTS®, Dolby Pro Logic®

What's the difference and why you should care....

Dolby Digital ®: Dolby Digital ® is considered by most to be the best sound reproduction out there. It was the first 5.1 channel surround sound format available on DVD. Dolby Digital ® started it's life in movie theaters and is another  reason to chunk your old VCR. VHS tapes cannot be encoded with Dolby Digital ®. All DVD disc players are capable of processing Dolby Digital® sound tracks, although some DVD Players provide their own Dolby Digital ® processors and have six connectors on the back. One for each of the sound channels supplied by the unit. So you need a true 6 speaker surround system to get the full effect.

DTS® Surround Sound: Developed by Digital Theater Systems, DTS ® also started out in theaters. At the movie theater the DTS ® soundtrack is played off of a separate CD and the synchronized with the movie. Of course on a home theater setup the DTS ® is encoded with the video on the DVD. Look for the DTS ® logo label on the disc. It is similar in quality to Dolby Digital ® and can also utilize six speakers. (Actually 5.1 as in Dolby Digital ®.)

Dolby Pro Logic®: Starting out as Dolby Surround ®, an older format created for movie theatres in the 1970's. Dolby Pro Logic ® is an improved version of the standard sound format and can produce a very good sound. Utilizing intelligent circuitry to guide each channel of sound to its appropriate speaker.
If you have a stereo VCR connected to a stereo sound system you'll be able to hear the Dolby Pro Logic ® soundtrack.
