DVD Answers

  • DVD stands for Digital Video Disc (or Digital Versatile Disc.) A DVD disc is the same size as a standard compact disc, but of course it can hold much more information. A DVD can hold 4.7 gigabytes, a CD can only hold 650 megabytes.

  • Did you know that many DVD units can play MP3's? Yes! Make sure the one you want can.. such as RCA Model # rc5240p

  • Check to see if the unit has a digital out jack, this will provide a superior picture.

  • Composite Audio/Video, most all audio/video units have these, but if you want get a better quality picture, buy a unit that has Component jacks. These are only on higher priced units but they're worth it. Component connections are a step up from S-video (standard) connectors. S-Video uses one cable with a 4-pin connector, Composite and Component Video use three cables with RCA connectors.

  • Use the best cable for audio/video transfer cables that you can afford.

  • Higher priced DVD players also offer "progressive scan" which will improve picture quality..JVC is one manufacturer that has this option.

  • Also if you want to experience true surround sound, such as DTS® or Dolby Digital®, you must have a DVD, old VHS tapes cannot be encoded for either.

 FAQ's:

Q.) I just put the disc in and it won't play or seems to be skipping, what can I do?
A.) A DVD's disc surface is very fragile, so careful handling is important. Take the disc out and look on the bottom to see if it's scratched. If you don't see any visible marks, the disc may just be dirty. Here's what you can do to clean it, run the disc briefly under "cool" tap water, then wipe completely dry with a soft, lint-free, non-abrasive cloth. The disc should play fine now. You can also purchase a DVD/CD cleaning kit.

Q.) I already have a Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) why would I want a DVD?
A.) Better picture and sound quality..plus many DVD discs offer additional movie scenes, such as scenes deleted from the theatrical release, and other features sometimes called "easter eggs." This term is also used in reference to computer software, in which the programmers placed hidden extra features or tiny surprises in the program. Many DVD's also allow you to change the film rating, view the film in letterbox format, and in some cases, change the movie ending. If you ever buy or rent a DVD player or disc, you won't ever go back to your VCR again.

Q.) Can I play CD's in a DVD player?
A.) Yes, as mentioned above many players will not only play normal audio CD's but will also play MP3's!
