HDTV (High Definition Television)
The old TV broadcast currently used in the North America, was designed to be used with the 1940/50's vacuum tubed "analog" sets. But today we have a new television system called HDTV or DTV. The new "digital" system will eventually replace the antiquated analog with a digital picture greatly surpassing the old style broadcast. HDTV offers a clearer, sharper, and wider picture. To receive this new type of broadcast you will need a true HDTV television. Some converters are becoming available and many big screens offer upgradeable versions. Currently, (depending upon screen size) HDTV units range from around $2000 on up. HDTV, does offer a very superior quality picture, but are still relatively expensive. There are also flat screen HDTV "Plasma" units that can be mounted directly on the wall. Flat screen HDTV's are even more pricey. Many Major TV networks have begun
broadcasting some programs for HDTV. What does "HDTV Ready" mean? Basically it means that the monitor is able to utilize the technology, but you still need a HDTV receiver for broadcast channels. The good news is these HDTV ready units will upgrade the picture on DVD's and is better than conventional analog TV's.
