Home Cinema

Home Cinema is now a reality the quality of which depends on your budget. The basic components range from the monitor or screen, to the sound, lighting, broadcast receivers and even your decor.

The simplest version is to just connect your TV to your home stereo. However true home cinema is much more. Real home cinema combines the best sound system and speakers for the room, with a custom designed video projector system. So basically you need three components, The TV (or video projector) an Audio/Video receiver amplifier and specific placement of the surround sound speakers.

The A/V stereo receiver is very important, and is different from a regular stereo receiver in that the A/V receiver decodes the surround sound soundtrack to multiple speakers.

The Video aspect can be provided by a regular 25 inch TV or a projection system. Depending on room size and cost, the bigger picture the better. When buying a new TV make sure the unit has direct video and audio inputs, most new sets do.

The Speakers are also very important for true surround sound reproduction and quality. A typical surround sound set up has 5-6 speakers.

How much does all this cost? Well the question is really how much do you want to spend. There are units priced for almost any budget with complete systems ranging from a few hundred to many thousand. Throw in a satellite if you are really committed. Of course you'll want to buy a DVD Player.

If you buy the components one at a time, expect price ranges for Big Screen Projections TV's to be from $1000-2500 range, again depending  on screen size and options. HDTV units are currently around $4500.00 for the big screen units, (40' or more.)

Surround sound "Home Theater in a Box," combo units include the A/V surround sound amplifier/decoder, cables, and speakers. These are in the $300-1000 range. Some combo units include a DVD player as well.
