Home Theatre Television Information

Rear Projection (Big Screen) TV's:
Projection models offer sizes of 40 inches and larger.
Rear Projection units reflect the picture off of a mirror and on to the back of the viewing screen.

Front Projection TV's:
These units project the picture onto a reflective screen very much like a movie projector.

Plasma (flat panel) display

Consists of many thousands of pixels, each generating its own light source. Because light doesn't have to be projected onto the screen, the size of the display is much smaller. Benefit: A flat panel display is slim and allows it to be hung on a wall. These units are still pretty pricey.

Direct View:

Is the normal "picture tube type" set we've all grown accustomed to.
Screen sizes 25 to forty inches, measured diagonally.

16x9: Refers to a true wide screen format, it allows you to see everything on the screen to the far left and right. If you've ever began watching a movie on broadcast television and saw the words "reformatted to fit your screen" come up at the beginning, the movie has been "cropped" on both sides to fit "squarely" on your screen.

Also some units offer picture-picture accessory, which is basically a smaller screen displayed on top of the larger picture that allows you to watch two channels at once.
